Beshbaliq, the old Northern Capital of the Uighurs
Located in Xinjiang Province about six miles north of the current Chinese town of Jimsar, east of Urumqi. Although listed as a "Protected Site" the main temple, shown above, was not open to the public when I visited here in 2000 and I was run off by the police moments after taking the photo above. However, the January 2003 in-flight magazine of Xinjiang Airlines had a extensive spread on this temple, including photos of what looks like very nice murals within. This would seem to imply that Beshbaliq is now an official tourist attraction.
