Mt. Kailash
Western Tibet
During the last week of May I, along with about 12,000 to 15,000 other people—mostly Tibetans from all over Tibet — did the Kora, or circumambulation of 21,771 foot-high Mt Kailas in remote western Tibet. From Kathmandu to Kailash it was a tortuous four-day trip by jeep over horrific roads to the base of Kailash. The Kora itself, about 31 miles long, took two and a half days. Walking with me was Dao Thanh-Huong from Paris. These are her photos:
Gauri Kund, a small lake just below 18,606
foot Drolma Pass, the highest point on the Kora. Sacred place
to Hindus, who attempt to bath in it when it is not frozen over.
