Amarbayasgalant Monastery is located in the valley of the Even River, in Selenge Aimag, Built in the 1730s in honor of Zanabazar, the first Bodgd Gegen (1635-1723), it was largely destroyed by the communists in 1937. It is currently being restored. This view is looking up the valley of the Even. |

The Pailar, or Spirit Shield, on the right - a standard feature of Mongolia monasteries, it deflects harmful spirits which may try to enter the front gate. To the left of the Spirit Shield is a smaller monument (see below). An identical structure to the right of the Spirit Shield has not survived. |
In the center of the Spirit Shield is a large emblem of glazed plaster. This is apparently a remnant of the original artwork of the monastery and not a reproduction. It is only slightly damaged. |
|
In earlier days this column included a sign which proclaimed that everyone, including visiting Bogd Gegens themselves, must dismount from their horses and walk the rest of the way to the monastery entrance. |

This building, just inside the entrance and to the left, once held a "beater" which called the monks to their devotions. |
